Seems like a nice entry level phone with good reviews. Android 6, micro SD slot, and Samsung brand are huge advantages.

If there's still any left in the world, the extra 10 bucks for the Zmax2 is probably worth it unless ya need the compactness of a 4.5 incher.

these specs are identical to the samsung sol for cricket, which I got for 49 on sale at BB. The sol had a 5 inch display. FYI, the bloatware will only give you 2-3gb usable. If you can bear with that, its not bad. Otherwise opt for Samsung galaxy amp prime from Cricket. This phone has 16gb and is around 79 with similar specs. Wish I had gotten that.

After receiving the unlock code, will a Tracfone (AT&T) or Freedompop SIM trigger the unlock screen or does it have to be T-Mobile?

If it doesn't trip the unlock code, whatever SIM you put in wasn't locked out in the first place, so it will work itself out.

* Cricket SIMs in AT&T GoPhones don't need unlock to work, and by extension, don't trigger the unlock screen to unlock it.

No worries...you're good in any event.

Sol has bigger + higher resolution screen + 0.5GB more RAM, so the Sol is better.

also for international purpose, this one has band 1 3 and 7 which maybe important to some people (completely moot for USA use).

The first statment is "incorrect" answer, only all GMS sim cards work with all unlocked AT&T phone, the availability of CDMA network(e.g. Verizon, Sprit network) is depending on the phone, and I doubt this one will take CDMA at all, although I did not check the document of this phone.
Now, since Tracfone (AT&T) or Freedompop are both GMS based,so they will work after unlock.
