Slickdeals is killing my browser (FireFox)

PeteC 216 34 July 2, 2016 at 07:15 AM
When I am on slickdeals my browser window stalls for many many seconds. If I have been attempting to scroll up or down nothing happens then all the scrolling happens at once.

The browser window is using over 40% of my memory and between 25% and 35% of my CPU.

It has been getting worse over the last few weeks.

I haven't experienced this on other sites.

What can I do?

Have you tried AdBlockPlus or some other ad-blocking plug-in?

No I haven't. I figured Slickdeals does a lot for me so let them make a little money. But if they don't do something to speed things up I guess I will have to do some add blocking.

I use ad blocks and still have trouble about once a week with Firefox locking up. I suspect it's due to having too many tabs open and never rebooting. So when it happens I just do a reboot.

I just experienced the same thing. Slickdeals is the only site I have experienced pop-overs, redirects and now an actual trojan. I think Slickdeals lets a greater variety of Ad-Choices ads then other sites or there are other ad services also being used. Windows Defender immediately popped up and said "Found some malware, Windows Defender is removing it." It's bad I have to rely on Windows Defender to catch anything.

I'll see if it allows me to attached the screenshots. The first is the page I opened and immediately got redirected. The second is the redirect along with the attempt to install.

Well I guess I'm not totally nuts.
Maybe I'll give Slickdeals a few days to straighten out it's act.
If FireFox continues to bog I'll load an add blocker.

It's not just Slick Deals this holiday weekend. Imgur.com has been getting a lot more of these malvertising/redirects this weekend, as well. The hackers and their bad websites and drone networks of compromised machines are working extra hard this weekend. Frown

Hey Pete. Thanks for posting about this. I haven't seen any performance issues, but I'll try to use FireFox a bit more to see if I can replicate. Is Slickdeals the only tab open during CPU usage spikes?

Sorry to hear about your experience. We did detect some suspicious ads on 7/2 but they were shut down very quickly. Unfortunately, the bad guys are able to infiltrate even the safest ad platforms. This happens rarely and is usually resolved within a very short time frame.

We don't do business with any suspicious ad networks and only work with a small number of ad platforms which are ranked among the safest in the industry. This is a global issue but some people notice it on Slickdeals more because this is where they consume a lot of page views. I can promise you that we're taking steps to combat this and we're make a huge effort to avoid any bad or intrusive ads.

To tell you the truth, I don't use tabs. I right click and open in new window. I do this because I know Slickdeal pages take forever to load so I let the new page start then click back to the page I was on.

I do this on many sites and very seldom do I get a "lock up" where nothing will happen on any of the windows. No scrolling or even closing of any windows. But when I do it with slickdeals I get the lockup almost instantly.

But I have to say I haven't experienced it in a day or so. I'll keep you posted.
