Someone posted this somewhere before and it is genius. Go to kayak.com https://www.kayak.com/cars/ in your browser and do a car rental search for your location and dates. Then leave the tab open and refresh it as often as you think about it, 5 times a day or 5 times a week. The prices fluctuate a lot - and you may run into a price mis_take or at least you will get the best deal.

A couple years ago we did this, reserved (no obligation, no credit card) a 5 week rental in florida for $750, and kept refreshing, and a couple weeks later, the same rental (different agency) was $250. I went directly to the car rental website and locked it in (again, no credit card needed). The deal or possible price mis_take was fixed within about 2 hours. Thought I would be denied when I went to pick up the car so I did not cancel the other reservation, but they did not blink.

Try this and report back!

Good tip (if it works). Will give it a try for a trip I've got in ~2 months.

costco prices are always cheaper than kayak.
On my last trip I kept checking costco, eventually the prices dropped, I booked, the next day prices dropped again, and again the next day. Each time i rebooked. Eventually prices spiked back up. I ended up booking 2 cars from different agencies, when I got to the airport one counter had a line a mile long so I went with the other one that was a few dollars more. I canceled the extra one.

Tough at the last minute. This kayak trick works best a few weeks to several weeks in advance.

Try looking at companies that have a last minute car rental. We used National in New Orleans and saved a lot of money. We did have to book the last 2 days at the regular price because it did not fall within the last minute window.

I just picked up a 5 day rental for full sized car at COSTCO for $53 and upgraded and got a volvo XC60 for a total of $100. Will try kayak trick also.
