8x4 is decent but the 16x4 is faster and newer iirc.. And around $59 on amazon.

I decided to get the SB6141 for $39.99 from Amazon instead.

Way more reliable and better quality.

Not meaning to challenge you, but what kind of reliability are you looking for? It is a standalone modem (in comparison to the all-in-one ones) and should not have any hiccups considering the router that you pair it with is strong and reliable enough. A modem like this either runs or does not run at all when you first plug it in. If it does not run at all, return it for a replacement. Once it runs, it should stay that way. One more thing is you should keep in mind reviews on Amazon are from people who are not very tech-savvy especially for tech products like this. Newegg should be a better source of reviews for modems.

I was more concerned about uptime. Some reviews said the modem suddenly stopped working after a couple months.

This modem isn't for me (I have a sb6183), it's for a friend who isn't tech savvy, and I don't want her going through the hassle of rebooting this every day. I need something that will work for months without reboot, like mines.

It is hard to believe the problem from that review is from the modem. Routers cause freezing and require reboot much much more often. But again, most people on Amazon are not as tech-savvy and usually blame wrongly. Just my 2 cents.
