sold by 47th Street Photo, but they appear to be an authorized Sigma dealer:

I had the tamron but found the image stabilization lacking. I picked up the sigma when it was $700 and it seems better.

about the same quality all around: only reason i'd get the sigma is to the buy the lens dock for $40 and be able to do firmware upgrades/adjustments at home - as opposed to pay for shipping to tamron so they update firmware.

that has not happened since last year and it was refurbished. This is brand new and sigma/tamron will likely be raising prices following canon/nikons lead.

you will be waiting a long time for being frugal: photography of the caliber of this lens is about getting out there and taking the shot. not counting pennies.

Are you running Canon or Nikon?
My Canon 6D argues with the Sigmas AF (old 50 1.4, 35 Art & 50 Art).
Switched to Nikon and I still have had some issues with Sigma AF (specifically w/ my 50 Art but my 35 Art is flawless) but not like I did on my Canon. But considering the lack of quality controls over there at Sigma (calibration issues, mount swap, cleaning), I'm pretty much done with them except for my SD1 setup.
On the other hand, my Tamrons (70-200, 150-600, 24-70) have worked perfectly straight outta the box with my D810. I can't comment on the more "consumer" offerings from Tamron but their "professional" lenses are truly the best bang for your dollar out there IMO.

Haha; the one tamron lens i have (24-70mm 2.8) has been sent back twice to tamron (with shipping on my cost) for calibration issues and not working well with AF on my 80d.

yeah, I kind of wonder if Canon's AF algorithms are more complicated than Nikon's.
Is it the VC or the old non-VC 24-70?

ive had both... and I am no expert ( i run everything on my camera in "auto" mode ) the
150-600 gave me some of the best pictures i have ever taken.. Blew the other lenses out of the water...
I will admit , If I knew what I was doing with the settings I could probably have gotten the other lenses to do just as good or even better.. But running in auto mode this lens made the pics look professional.. (my body was a d5500)
