If my math is right, which is probably isn't, the extra ticket is worth about 1.20 and a Megamillions ticket is worth... 1.90 right now, if the jackpot is won by a single person.

Of course, it's got a tremendous tail, so take as you will.

Edit: About 60% of the Powerball and like 90% of the Megamillions is locked in the jackpot.

Idiot's Tax:

A voluntary tax that is quite popular, usually used for education. The Idiot Tax may be paid in $1, $2, $5 or $10 increments but combinations are possible. The greater the idiot one is, the greater the tax one pays. Idiot Tax receipts can be scratch-off or have a combination of numbers.

No deal here. Statistically buying 5 tickets is not significantly better odds than just buying one. Then again people who understand statistics dont play the lottery. TD for suckers bet.

Understood and stipulated....

However, I'll throw a dollar($1) down on a wild dream.

Right. But for an SDer the better deal is actually buy one of each ticket at retail. This 'deal' requires investing more money for the same odds of winning.

The lottery is an unfair tax on people who are bad at math.

Megamillions is only $1 per ticket and Powerball is a $2 ticket now. Good deal for those that want to donate their money.

I don't like your logic, you have the "same" shit odds either way.

i only play these lotteries when they get very high, not so much because its a better value, but bc it lets me have that fun ride and build up even knowing its basically a loss. the fun for the $5-$10 I spend every few months is worth it to me.

I don't go lotto crazy, but when it gets high I like to get a few tickets and dream.

All of these SDers must really be awful at math, seeing as how the EV of a MM ticket is > $1, even after taxes. Free powerball just adds to this bonus.

Now, the variance is what will get you, but this is as good of a deal as you'll get at gambling.
