Thread Details

When the exchange rate fell, I went to my amazon.co.uk basket and found out that numerous Lego sets in my "Save for Later" would no longer ship, even if I've done it before. Confused. In fact you can even search with AmazonGlobal checked, and the sets show up, but when you click you get the dreaded "Sorry, this Seller doesn't deliver to the United States". So I decided to look at other reputable bricks, like Cobi (Polish) and Sluban. BTW I also looked at Enlighten and Wange sets (castles and extra city buildings) at Ingenious Toys storefront at Amazon.co.uk. I tried to convince them to ship to the US, but there rates ended up twice on what my order here shows, so it was prohibitive. Maybe we at SD can convince them it's worth it, especially if they have to reach a certain volume to get favorable shipping rates from Amazon.co.uk.

Lego does not make army sets. While Mega Bloks Call of Duty ones are some of the best out there, they are quite limited in selection. I double checked, and even with shipping and the exchange rate these are cheaper than in the US. Note the rough box sizes (piece count) due to shipping. Sample orders and it's run cumulatively - note the ITEMS are added each time, but the total shipping for everything is at the end each line. That's because I strongly shipping is being honestly calculated by the algorithm, and should give you a feel for how it will work. Individual sets are probably cheaper in the US because of the extra shipping cost from UK on the first item. After you add the second item they are cheaper. Note the Matilda and Centurion tanks are from the World of Tanks premium lines. They won't let me add vehicles from that line in stock, but WILL let me add them for future shippment.

If you're going to purchase multiples - yes it is a good deal, as the shipping is computed honestly. Essentially there's been a 15% price cut due to exchange rates. Plus, and that's why I stressed military sets, Lego won't make them. Also you cannot take advantage of the weakness with the pound on Lego out of the UK any more as they've shut that down apparently (which is the other reason for this thread, fishing for anybody who has found a workaround to Amazon.co.uk and it look like Amazon.de have both stopped shipping Lego to the US Market - Canadian addresses don't appear to work either).

Actually, Cobi is from Poland and is known to be near Lego-like in their quality, and in the United States are often not very cheap, which is why I made the thread. Lego won't make any modern or even semi-modern military equipment so these are not knock-off or a "cheap fake." In fact Cobi has designed their own individual track design for treads you assemble and it's BETTER than Lego's is. Obviously you've never heard of the brand, opened one of their boxes, or assembled on of their kits. That's like saying only by a BMW and everything else is a cheap fake. Please understand, and you'll have hopefully seen my comment about Lego quality-control in a recent thread - their QC is legendary, not just in bricks but in manufacturing as a whole. They are just that good.

Sluban is supposed to be as good, though I cannot speak from the same experience as with Cobi - and Mega Bloks, especially from the last two years since they started making many of their bricks in Canada (you've read on the Lego boxes that they now have components from Mexico and China - yes, Rtfm or at least the box). Bluntly, many of Lego's newer designs actually hold up to rough play by little kids less well than the Cobi and Mega Bloks. That however is not a problem with Lego bricks, just the fact that they now have more designs for collectors and older "boys", made to sit pretty on a shelf and not really be played with. The minimum age on the box is NOT always helpful guidance to how well the design hold up to a 5 or 6 year old. Also the Cobi are based off actual military vehicles - so they start off with a robust design. Trust me, when a 5 year decides to play rough with an M1 Abrams or some kind of brick mech, guess which one falls about fastest? Of course, given they are bricks they can put them back together, or make something completely new. Big Grin

Kids shouldn't play with military toys anyway. Not unless they also have toy hospitals they can bomb with their military toys.

Phooey. Unless you want an entire generation of pussi3s walking around confused about whether to use the men or the women's restroom. Oh wait, that's already happened.

What does that have to do with dropping bombs on hospitals? Does that make you a "pussi3" for not wanting to do that?
