slickdeals website is slow

imar3l 167 44 July 4, 2016 at 09:06 PM
starting last week it seems like ad blocker either do not work or that slickdeals is using some sort of proxy for advertisement. Either way, the site is loading very slow and chrome is crawling. c'mon, i know you make $ from ads, but at least show text ads with using a blocker

it's the new website. they added a bunch of ads that are really slow.

Classic view w/ adblock: ~7 seconds
Classic view w/o adblock: ~10 seconds

"updated site" w/ adblock: ~10-18 seconds depending on if ablock blocks all of the ads or not.
"updated site" w/o adblock: ~18 seconds

If you don't need pictures, you can use the basic-html site, which loads in less than a second.

on the upside, another deal site I tried that seems reasonably popular took ~ 30 seconds to load so i guess slickdeals isn't that bad...

Slickdeals has gotten so slow to the point that I don't really want to come here every day anymore because it takes ages to load.

I noticed this the other day too. DNS lookups were taking forever when loading pages on slickdeals (and some other sites too), I run my own DNS and that is not the problem. I tracked it down to one specific site they try to load on every page, assets.adobedtm.com, assume it is one of the trackers they use here and it is not resolving, timing out and causing the delay. Added it to localhost on my DNS and Slickdeals site speed problem solved.

With Chrome, you can load the developer tools from the menu, select network at the top and hit f5 to reload the slickdeals page you are on. I was seeing a timeout for satelliteLib-XXXX after about 10 seconds. That was assets.adobedtm.com timing out because they site does not appear to exist. At least that worked for me.

Are you running any extensions? That is a tag manager provided by adobe. We haven't noticed any major issues with their DNS on our side. If it isn't too much trouble a screenshot of that part of your network tab with dtm highlighted (so that tooltip with the breakdown of that resources timing) would be helpful too.

It is not my browser, I noticed it on all of my machines and phones on my network. I dug deeper and appears to be my local DNS server.

When I use Google or Comcast DNS, it resolved fine, my DNS server (Unbound) does not. Strange, never had that problem with a single domain before. Sorry for the wild goose chase.

Code:
nolife@file01:~$ nslookup

It's not just ads. I am using an ad blocker and this website runs painfully slow for me. It takes a good 19 seconds before I am able to responsively scroll a deal page.

I ran Chrome's performance profiler and it looks like script hell. This really needs to get looked at.

If you look at the interactions timeline near the top... in all the areas where you see dense pink, the browser is busy running scripts and I can barely scroll down the page. Near the 20 second mark, it starts smoothing out and I can start navigating the page. I should also add that I've tested this in incognito mode, which disables all browser add-ons and runs the site in a completely unmodified state. Same issue, scripts bog down the browser for the same length of time.

same, it will even crash my browser.

I've also noticed the url change to - http://slickdeals.net/g00// - since it has been slow/crashing.

I don't think i had logged in yet, no. And when I tested it in chrome's incognito mode, I was definitely not logged in.

For me it's the unresponsive site slickdeals.sc.omtrdc.net that slows the initial load.

So does that mean you are okay if this is the experience of someone visiting the site for the first time?
