"Cheap" people... here? You must be joking. We all want to pay top dollar. That's why this site is called onepercenters.com. look around
I bought a playbar and sub a few months ago and wished I did more research before I bought. Sounds great but the playbar is severely lacking features. The only input is a single optical so if your TV doesn't do surround pass through which most don't you'll need an optical switcher to hook up your sources if you want anything more than stereo. And then Sonos flat out refuses to support dts which is the bluray standard. At this price range I would expect it to have all formats supported even dtsx. Those things gave me problems right out of the box so I returned it and never looked back.

Limited to 2 each of white and black. I picked up all four for the house.

I really wanted to get a full Sonos system up and running in the house, but it was always just too expensive. Ended up buying a bunch of cheap Chromecast Audio units. It is not as "finished" as Sonos, but it does the job at 1/5 the price.

Just throwing it out there for any other cheap people like myself.

I don't like the playbar. It's really lacking without a sub. I think the sonos 3 has better highs and obviously better lows due to a woofer/fullrange driver. But in the hometheater environment get the playbar.

Just out of curiosity, which speaker systems did you connect to each Chromecast Audio? Do you have to manually turn on the systems you want to use or can you do all that remotely from your phone? And do you mean 1/5 of the price of any Sonos system or specifically the PLAY:3 or Playbar*?

Hopefully the Chromecast Audio setups work out for you! If you don't have to manually turn on the speakers connected to Chromecast Audio, then that'll be a plus, because my understanding (hopefully incorrect) is that you have to manually turn on the speakers, which is kind of a hassle.

*1/5 of the price seems a bit...unbelievable, since (if we're comparing with the PLAY:3, and let's be generous and compare with the full retail price of $299) that would mean for $60, you're getting a Chromecast Audio for $35 and buying $25 speakers that are supposed to sound as good as the PLAY:3? And the reason I'm saying you're buying speakers is that you mentioned getting your house outfitted with Sonos speakers and that you bought a "bunch" of Chromecast Audio devices, which I assume to be at least 4, and generally speaking, most people don't have 4 (or more) sets of good speakers lying around to use with Chromecast Audio devices....

Is the Play 3 really a lot better than the Play 1? I've been looking at these for a while (I am not a big fan of the bluetooth speaker I have now) but I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet. Thanks!

The Play 3 by itself is better than a Play 1, but definitely not better than a pair of Play 1s (in Stereo) which is what I would recommend.

We have a 1,3, and 5. The 5 sounds great but the 3 is ready good for this price.
The 1 is good for a small room. The 3 fills a 15x15 room with no problem.
