Or, for $37 more, there's the one with 256GB SSD, 12 hour battery life, and optical drive. Seems to be the only difference.

Yes, you are right. Another difference is that the GPU here has 4GB GDDR5 instead of 2GB GDDR5 in the $550 model. However, that is not any deciding factor at all as 940MX not powerful enough to benefit from 4GB Video memory.

Battery is the same as in SSD model.
This one is also just a tiny bit lighter and smaller.

This is a 4 cell. SSD model is a 6 cell. 7 hours vs 12 hours.

This one is 2800 mAh. SSD one is 2800 mAh. 2800 mAh vs 2800 mAh.
Number of cells that make up those 2800 is largely irrelevant.
Now battery life can of course differ, but batteries are same in capacity.

Edit: nope, was wrong.

another minor difference that model is 0.3 lbs heavier. If this was 3lbs that would be considered bigger difrence at 5+ lbs I am not so sure it matters that much

Are the battery voltages the same?

Edit: probably not since 4 cell vs 6 cell?

Eh, voltage part completely went out of my head, silly me. Probably not the same.

The picture on this one says backlit keyboard, but that's the only place it's mentioned. It's not mentioned again.

Seems like voltage would be the same, especially for such a similar laptop.

The use of different cell counts in laptops is for higher capacity. Wiring in parallel increases capacity and voltage stays the same. So it seems a 4 cell and 6 cell for a very similar laptop (so probably same cell mfgr and capacity) wouldn't have the same capacity. And I don't think any laptop uses over 4 cells in series, since that would be 21V or more off the charger.

It's difficult to get excited about any gaming laptop without a GTX 970 minimally. Even at this price. All other graphic cards below it just don't cut it.

Description states 6GB of RAM instead of 8GB. Integrated GPU Intel 520 instead of the 940MX.
Not the same at all
