While this is solid advice, if someone is just starting out golf they are going to have no idea what to look for at a consignment stop and would probably end up with some 25 year old club set with wooden woods (feels weird to type that...). It's like me (who is in IT) telling my dad to just make sure he buys a laptop with a high resolution screen and SSD... I'd be speaking Japanese to him. These are good starter sets, and why yes you could go to a thrift store and probably get a set and an old leather falling apart bag for 40-50 bucks I think you're better off spending the 135 and getting clubs made somewhat in line with newer technology. To the same point if you spend 135 and hate golf, you could sell the set for 100 bucks easy, but you'd never be able to get rid of what you pick up at the "dump".

If youre just starting out, go hit up a consignment store or garage sale. Look for irons with a larger cavity backing

nice beginner set, amazon reviews show some issues with the quality of the shafts (heads breaking off at the base of the shafts, but warranty should take care of any issues and youll know within a few months if you have any issues with the shafts quality and if they are epoxied correctly

If I'm just starting out, do I need the 18 over the 12 piece set?

No, you really don't. I use 12 clubs.

I think the 18 piece set is the one with 12 clubs as it has 5 headcovers and a bag. The 12 piece set has 9 clubs if I am not mistaken

A very good starter set. Played them for a year then sold them. Took me awhile to find clubs I liked better

Great starter set for me. I have found the quality to be very good. Be aware you'll need to pick up a sand wedge.

Just starting out. Any advice on which set to get? Is the 18 piece worth the extra $115? Thanks.

The difference between the two is the more expensive one comes with a 5-wood, a 4-hybrid and a sand wedge, plus additional head covers.
If you're just starting out, I probably would save the money and go with the cheaper set. It has all the clubs you'll use most often.
Then see how you like golf. If you decide to keep playing, use the money you saved to get a better set down the road.
