The Asus RT-N66W N900 is a great router - I have been using this exact router for about 2 years and it works fantastic. Just make sure you keep the firmware updated. I recently I switched to the Merlin custom firmware without any problems, I highly recommend this router. Thanks TDMVP for sharing

Should I go for the Asus n66w or wait on the archer c7?

Both are good routers (I have used both) but the TP-Link C7 has better range and wall penetration if you have a larger space you need to cover. TP-Link is now preventing use of alternative firmwares such as dd-wrt though, I've read.

I got an N65u refurbished and was wondering if the custom firmware supports newsgroup .nzb files. I use this from time to time and that's the only reason why I stick to stock rom.

Same here. I updated the firmware in June and when I tried to load Merlin, I got the error. I haven't tried one of the Betas yet though.

The RT-N66W has substandard quality control.

And if you send in the rebate you are not eligible to return..

So I recommend making sure its working correctly for a few days then mailing in the rebate.

ASUS warranty support is very slow and subpar as well.

The router itself when working correctly is great and DD-WRT support is a big Plus.

Very good router. Tomato Shibby is good firmware as well as Merlin.

One way I've found around getting an error when attempting to upload new firmware is to do a reboot first and then upload.

Is that the 2.4 GHz band?
Have you tried the 5 GHz band?
Are you using stock or Open-WRT firmware?
I'm thinking of getting the EA4500, so any feedback would be useful.

Looks like it is an issue with going from a certain stock firmware to Merlin right now. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
