I was just considering to get a 8ch DVR system preferably 1080p (but balked at the price range) but this price is really tempting. The need for 1080p is not 100% urgent so I can grab this Annke, wait for 1080p prices to drop further then pass the old system to relatives.

And over 6 years I've installed (for self use and for others) four analog systems, a 4ch 720p sPoE system (Zmodo) and a $100 4ch 720p analog HD-TVI system (LaView). I'm quite happy with the video quality of both 720p systems esp. the cheap LaView. Anything less, be it D1 (704x480), 960H (which is total BS for low-end systems) is unacceptable since 720p isn't that much more $.

It is not hard to do. One just opens up the unit. (around 7 screws) and attaches the hard drive to two cables, and adds 4 more screws through the bottom of the case to hold the drive in pace. Make sure the cables will not get pinched when closing the case, and re-apply the case screws. Start the DVR and go into setting and there will be an option to format the hard drive.

Any old hard drive will not last long in the unit. You will need to purchase a hard drive that is AV / Surveillance rated.

This line of hard drives are rated as such:

Other notes:

I have only had trouble with LaView and ZModo DVRs (I also had a LaView quit in 5 months, a ZModo in 7) They both had bad stand-alone PC software.

For some reason, with the ZModo, I had to place the hard drive in a PC and use Diskpart 'clean' before it would work. The unit seemed to lack the power from the power supply to do the formatting from an out-of-the-bag drive. It did not seem to be a software issue, I could hear that the drive would not spin up, and reset. Looking at the max amp required for the drive, was close to the power supply supplied with the unit.

buyer beware, the mobile app is hidden by a QR code . the manufacturer might have done that on purpose so you can't look at its reviews
