Try a full face mask and you never use the regular mask again: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_s...Caps%2C157

And, as usual, you can buy it for about half price from China.
Free advice but worth 10x more than that. Spend 40 bucks (amazon) and get the Cressi Scuba Diving Snorkeling Freediving Mask Snorkel Set in clear.

It's about the quality of an $85-$100 mask at your local dive shop. We went to the Caribbean recently and had a 7 year old who could dog paddle but not much else with us. I took him to 2 or maybe 3 trips to the local pool and let him try the Cressi. (That I bought just for him) He did ok in the pool. We did not get to the sea for another month but he hit the reef and had no problem. In fact he did amazing. Within about 5 minutes I had to literally remind myself to keep him in my sight because I was swimming away like he was an adult.

I would attribute 75% of his success to having the right mask on his face. If it had leaked or fogged, he was not old enough or skilled enough to handle it.

Three more notes.

1) I said above get the clear. If you really want a color or if you buy multiple and want to color code them (we did) that's OK but the clear gives you a great view. Just know that on pure quality, the clear is the best bet.

2) I'm not sure how, but I'm a linebacker sized guy and it fits me fine and the 7 year old. Now one of the people in the party has a funny shaped face. She has never found a mask that fit right and neither did this one. I have enough experience to know it is her and not the mask. It fit everyone else in the party fine. With any mask, some folks will say it does not fit right and they don't realize it's them. This mask is probably the most 'universal fit' I've ever come across with years of experience. -- That said, know that buying a mask mail order is like buying shoes mail order. It might not be compatible with your face.

3) Get some good anti fog stuff. In my rush I forgot to and while it did not fog much, I wished I had it. This is not a huge deal, the old spit in the mash trick pretty good but real antifog would would have been awesome.

Lastly, considering the cost of your trip, $40 is chump change to make a remarkable experience. And do you ~really~ want to put a rental snorkel in your mouth?

EDIT BECAUSE I FORGOT THE BEST PART: The snorkel is freaking amazing. If you have never snorkeled before then this is worth the money by itself. It clears magically. You can just dive underwater, surface and breath. Magic. I've used dozens of snorkels over the years and this is the best. If I ever find a mask to fit the person I mention above who can't find one to fit, I'll buy her a Cressi snorkel.

They're only good if you stay at the surface or do shallow dives. Also, much bulkier to pack.

Same price at Academy.

Academy seems to have pretty good prices for other snorkels and masks from the few times I've browsed the store.

I know its like 3x the price and you can probably find one cheaper but I really suggest the snorkels like that. They have a floating piece on the end of the snorkel and when you start to go under water or a wave hits it closes off the snorkel and keeps the water out. They are super handy imo. Yes you can just blow really hard and get most the water out of snorkel if it gets in but rarely do you get it all. This keeps you from tasting the salt water nearly as much and I really like these styles. Just my 2 cents.

Can you comment on why full face mask is better? I've never snorkel before and going on a Caribbean trip in September. I don't know if I should rent one from hotel or buy and bring along.

Totally different (better) experience: free nose breezing, no dry throat, much wider view; no pressure on your sinus area and around eyes, especially for a long time wearing (because of much longer line of contact with the skin).
And right: probably, not for diving and high waves (but it has a valve to prevent water from entering). BTW, it can carry GoPro and the snorkel can be disconnected for transportation. I have about 20 years of "experience" with a regular one, and am totally exited about this thing. Bought mine for about 39$ (see my message in SD) and got it in time .
