Really want extended 3D!! I'm in no hurry. I'll wait. It'll be back on deal soon enough.

I thought I did too, but after considering that the LOTR extended set I own is NOT in 3D (and never will be available in 3D, as far as I know), this extended blu-ray edition of The Hobbit trilogy is the best match to my LOTR extended blu-ray set, for the sake of completion.

Eventually, both sets will probably be re-released in 4K (perhaps even together, in a single 2-in-1 set), and by then I might be interested in 4K versions, rendering the versions I already have redundant.

A 3D extended version of The Hobbit trilogy would surely cost more than today's DoTD price for the non-3D extended version. Knowing some time in the future I'll probably replace whatever version I buy (3D or not), this less expensive option makes sense, to me. Most of the time my husband doesn't feel like wearing glasses anyway. We have a lot of 3D movies we've never watched in 3D because he rarely feels like wearing the glasses. I suspect 4K will be his preference over 3D, as an upgrade.

BUT, in the meantime, we've been waiting for over a year for Amazon Instant Video to make Five Armies available for rent (it was only available for rent for a short time out of order of series sequence). Now, we can re-watch the entire trilogy in proper sequence at our leisure, with all the extras.

I checked the UK site a few hours ago and didn't see a better or even comparable price on the Extended version there.

Extended 3D (which includes 2D as well) was available a day or so ago at gbp40 but it's been cheaper. The fact Amazon is out of stock of 3D extended would suggest a reissue is on the cards.
