How do you know for sure there is a red inside. When we got the 3TB external some were red and most were green. I think the reds were a fluke, WD dumping inventory of reds or running out of greens. If you got one and it had a Red inside what was the WD run code on the bottom of the box so we can look for that version of the 8TB external

When WD 5TB external drives were on sale last year and found to have RED drives in side, it was trial and error. Basically people found out that certain upc or serial numbers on the sticker were found to be ones with Red drives inside after opening them up and sharing that info on Slickdeals. But that didn't last long as they started having more Green then Red. I got one last year and Iwas barely able to see the red color on the drive looking at extreme angle with a flash light through the heat vents. But I had to buy first.

I saved this from another thread, but I never validated/verified if it's true or not:

GEBHMCK = HGST HUH728080ALE601 (Enterprise)
HEBHMCK = WD WD80EZZX (Red)

P.S. When I saw the Deal Alert, I immediately got Buyer's Remorse for spending $310 on an 8TB Red from Newegg -_-

remember manufacturer warranty will be void if drive is popped out of the enclosure

Not necessarily. Save the enclosure and tell WD that you needed the data off and had a professional attempt to recover the data first.

This is the regular price for the 8TB My Book, I purchased mine from B&H a few months ago to save on tax.

The drive is a WD WD80EZZX which is suppose to be a HGST Helium drive but with a lower/slower rpm.

this would be fairly hot if there was a way to confirm it's a red without having to open the box.
