Isn't $100 for the 4TB Seagate portable the lowest it's ever been?

Anyone know if there's an actual SATA drive in there, or if the USB 3.0 is soldered directly to the drive PCB?

I'm almost 100% positive that there's a standard SATA interface drive in there: ST4000LM016 [seagate.com]

That's my hope. Searching "SATA" in the Amazon reviews gives a few responses (mostly PS4 owners looking to replace their HDDs). There are a mix of reports of drives having SATA and USB 3.0 connectors on the PCBs, but the only response regarding the 4TB drive says its a a regular SATA drive.

Seagate's 4TB fares much better than the 3TB - 40% annual failure rate, as opposed to 2.6%.

WD's 3TB has less than 10%, and 6TB is less than 5%.

So at least SG has improved...

40% failure rate for 3TB? Only 2.6 failure rate for 4TB?

that's encouraging...

5 TB Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive (STEB5000100)
Really disappointed by performance of the drive. It's OK to use it as a regular file storage, but it's impossible to use as backup drive. I tried both Acronis True Image and Seagate Backup and both failed to create a backup. Something wrong with USB interface of the drive. The drive disappears from the system and throughput is very slow. I even RMAed the drive and got exactly the same result with a new one. Going to disassemble it and use as pure SATA drive.

Costco has the Seagate 5TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive (STDT5000600) for $10 more ($120). Probably worth the extra $10 for Costco's liberal return policy.

Somewhat unrelated, I just used Visa's extended warranty service to file a claim for my Toshiba external 2 TB hard drive that failed after 3.5 years (had a 3 year warranty). They refunded my purchase price without any issue. I've used it successfully for a few other things too and it's been relatively painless.

Can you elaborate on the steps you took for the refund? I'm in literally the eggzact same situation. Have a Toshiba desktop external 3TB that's going 3.5 years nao and has recently failed just past the warranty. Bought with a Visa off Amazon. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
