Couldn't agree more. The Fire OS really handicaps this great little tablet. It's true that you can load a new ROM, but in actuality, the android backbone of the Fire OS is quite capable. All you really need to do is to get rid of the Fire OS fascade, remove OTA updates and adds, add Google Play apps and root it to have a very functional tablet.

RootJunky created a tool that makes doing this very easy to do for the Fire 7 (5th generation): With the Supertool, you can easily perform the following actions to your tablet by only pushing a couple buttons:

1. ADB driver install and test
2. Install Google play store plus remove ads on some fire os versions
3. block ota updates
4. boot device to twrp recovery 5.0.1 and below
5. Install FlashFire App
6. root amazon Fire 5th gen on android 5.1.2 and below
7. replace stock fire launcher with Nova launcher
8. remove lock screen ads on fire os 5.1.2 and below
9. Update SuperTool Files

You can watch this tool in action here [youtube.com].
Please visit RootJunky's website here [rootjunky.com] to access the tool.

Are these even useable? I have a 2nd generation fire that seems somewhat slow to my other tablets, but I wouldn't mind picking up a 7inch profile tablet. Can anyone chime in who has this? Thanks.

I got my kids (10 and 4) each one when they were $35 back before Christmas. We had to add a micoSD card, but other than that they seem to work well for the price. Although I don't use it much they seem perfect for kids and I like the parental controls/ time limits I can set.

It's skinned over an older version of Android, but we use a couple in our house as kind of a portable gaming device and portable tv, with Hulu and Netflix and such. Works fine.

No bells, no whistles...and Bluetooth doesn't recognize most things. But the price is right.
