The real question is if the hobbit benefits from 3D. Some movies, yes, the hobbit plods along with a lot of slow detail type shots. I'd be interested if anyone having seen it in 3D would think it is worth the expense in 3D. Then there's also the fact that this is the extended edition

If you like The Hobbit, then this is a fantastic deal. You can't find this particular trilogy in the US for less than 100 bucks. Its region free so it should play just fine on your BR player. Oh and btw, if you aren't a fan, try to find something meaningful to do with your life instead of wasting time complaining about how much you hated the movies.

Thanks! I ordered this back in November for around the same price. Unfortunately, it never arrived and because they were all sold out, Amazon UK had to refund me. As a 3D fan, it's nice to get another shot at owning this.

Is anyone able to verify that the discs they will send are actually region free? I tried ordering "region free" UP! on blu-ray and they sent a region locked version. I set up an exchange and they sent me the same exact region locked disc again.

Up is an odd release -- one of two that function like that. UP 3d disc is region free. Up 2d was region locked as a standalone item so the 3D/2D combo pack contains the old 2D disc and the updated 3D disc which will play fine

Hobbit is basically a Warner release (or New Line through Warner since the merger) which has been nearly 100% region free since the beginning

The Hobbit disc have been confirmed for a couple years as completely US compatible except the UV codes which must use a proxy method to be redeemed outside UK

Nobody officially seesm to know what's up with the US Amazon exclusive 3D Extended Trilogy. It's been OOS for months at Amazon and only availalble through 3rd Party sellers.
If it not completely out of print it's acting that way. There was some hope that it was being readied fro wide retail release back in the winter, but so far no indication of that and Warner
hasn't leaked any information one way or the other
It was always $85-130 when the UK release was $30-60 cheaper despite them being identical (add the German and French and othe EU boxset) other than the cosmetics.

I've been wanting the extended edition trilogy. I didn't buy the 3D version because I don't care for it but I looked up the UK Region free trilogy blu-ray and it's only $34.39. So thanks for reminding me I still wanted this trilogy!

The only downside is that the digital copies are not region free, per the UK reviewers. Otherwise, the after tax price for me is a mere $2 more than Amazon.com's DoTD price for the non-3D set on July 9.

My decision is either...
--$48 with USA digital copies but no 3D, OR
--$50 with 3D but inaccessible digital copies.

Since my USA non-3D set from July 9's DoTD arrived in unusually good condition, I guess I'll forego this UK deal. I must say though that the set I just received is still sealed, so I was strongly tempted to return that set and buy this one.

I'll admit this too: in addition to the digital copy issue, I also don't like the large "12" symbols on the UK disks -- yeah, I'm odd like that. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

But that's not the Extended editions though a good price on the Theatrical Trilogy - not a lot lower than the US set however.

Oddly there isn't an Extended Edition Trilogy 2D only box at UK

And the UK digital issue is really a minor issue since it's easy enough to use the workarounds to get it activated.
Persian Mafia often has a short tutorial in some of his UK deal thread -- either the Deal Talk Hobbit or LOTR thread had so you could likely search it easy enough

Aw shoot! Thanks for pointing that out! I just cancelled.

That's deceptive... I searched "Extended Edition" and the DVD popped up for $60 but there are buttons to choose "Blu-Ray" or "3D." I didn't bother to read it thinking it would just give me a different disc type instead of changing the actual movie edition shake head
