I just checked on few hotels that I wanted with various other search sites like Expedia, Priceline, etc. Just curious that all the hotels I wanted are $15 more expensive on Hotwire than other sites. So, I'm curious if they are giving you a discount or just hiking the price up thinking you're getting a discount. It's not just one hotel but various others. So, do some shopping. One more thing, Hotwire didn't offer me more options on different type of rooms as Expedia or some other search sites.

So confused by the "Hot Rate" hotel. You are supposed to gamble on the location of your family vacation to save $20 on the room rate? How am I supposed to know anything about the hotel meeting my needs if they can't tell you what it is?

Yes. You pay less but don't know the details. Only general features. It's obviously not for everyone.

Getting a "Hot Rate" hotel can be a gamble as you don't know the hotel for sure until you pay for it. But the savings can be be much more than $20 a night! Even $20 a night for five days is $100 and a nice dinner. :-)

Amenities listed can guide you in seeing if the hotel meets your needs. And websites like Betterbidding.com have lists of hotels and the amenities that Hotwire has reported so you can better "guess" at the hotel. Ratings from Tripadvisor help too in narrowing down the possibilities. And the Hotwire ratings indicate such needs as cleanliness.

A month ago I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Carlsbad for about $95/night after taxes and fees as a "Hot Rate" hotel. I spent about an hour researching and was 95% sure before I made the reservation that I was getting the Holiday Inn. (And the other 5% would have been for a place that was even better...) The lowest rates I recall seeing was around $150/night. So I saved over $200 by taking a gamble. And the stay was very nice.

The $15 Off $150 is just another nice bonus.
