other than it's a m2, how's the performance compare to an evo 850 ssd?

Read and write a meh at best. Not worth getting a m.2 if it isn't any faster than a typical 2.5 ssd imo

The m.2 factor will have little or no bearing on the comparison here, since it's still a SATA device.

This seems a pretty good deal, but only if you specifically need M.2. I picked up a SanDisk 256GB for $75 about 9 months ago so this is only a little bit cheaper. 2.5" SSDs are still cheaper for the same capacity. So not worth it if a regular SSD would work for you.

In my case I used one for a laptop that only had M.2, but shortly upgraded to to a 500GB EVO 850 when a deal came along and didn't want to bother returning the 256GB. That left me trying to figure out what to do with it. First I put it in a external case with USB3 and had myself a super speedy, super-sized flash drive. Then I got a 2.5" drive-sized SATA adapter tray to use it in my desktop as a regular SSD. That seemed like a waste of a M.2 drive. And that's when I came across the perfect use for my extra M.2 drive. I found a 2.5" PATA adapter on Amazon and now use it in one of my old laptops that I still use, but only has PATA interface. PATA laptop drives are usually only about 60-80GB and 5200rpm. I put it in and now my 11 year old laptop has a massive. Of course it's still slow by today's SATA standard, the interface maxes out at around 133 MB/s

TLDR: A great use for a M.2 drive is to get an 2.5" PATA adapter case and revive an old laptop.
