I can't remember seeing a better deal than this on an external Blu-Ray drive. Would be a nice addition to anyone with a FHD ultrabook/hybrid/tablet who has a collection of Blu-Rays.

Was at first happy to see this offer for an affordable Blue-Ray burner, then I read through the information...so glad I did.

The majority of the reviews are negative. On a Mac it requires the use of two USB ports and eject doesn't work with it. Doesn't come with usable software requiring purchase of their upgraded software or third party trial & error to find something that works. Even with Windows manual eject button tends to fail/fall apart.

I guess if you have no drive at all and just needed something for occasional use it might still be worth $22, presuming the rebate works as some reported it didn't, but overall I cannot see this as being a Slickdeal.

Only reads them. Burns cd's and dvd's. There is a burner for $75AR, click the 'writer' button on the product page.

I've seen this drive show up 3-4 times in the last month and it always sounds good until I read the reviews of the drive DOA, dying within a few months, or rebate not sent. Followed by the manufacturer telling them to try a cd or dvd and do 99 driver replacements.

No blu ray playback software either, and it looks like the software it does come with doesn't work on windows 10.

First, it's not a Blu-ray Burner, it's a combo drive... meaning it can burn DVDs and READ Blu-rays. If it was a Blu-ray Burner, I would have said such in the title and OP. Portable Blu-ray Burners are usually $35 to $40 on sale.

Second, I've seen negative reviews on Asus optical drives for quite some time, but I rarely pay attention to them. The majority of people complain about stupid things like Blu-ray playback software that they expect to be included. It is never included in pretty much any optical drive deal I've posted except for 1 in the past 4 years (it was a Rosewill drive and the software was 2 versions old). There's a reason why people either pay for the best option on the market (CyberLink PowerDVD) at $40 to $50 a license... or use torrents to otherwise acquire it. It is expensive and would raise the price of the optical drive substantially if bundled.

As for the requiring 2 USB ports, that is a system limitation, not the drives fault. Most newer laptops will be able to power the drive using one port. Only older systems and tablets will typically require the use of the Y cable because the ports don't provide enough power.

Finally, in regards to the quality of the drive itself... Asus doesn't make optical products to my knowledge. I believe they just use re-badged LG and Lite-on drives inside their own enclosures. I've owned several of their optical drives without issue in multiple years of use.

Also, the Rebate Center and process is about as easy as you're going to get, and fully trackable like any 4MyRebate offer. Only stipulation that is different here is Asus rebates require the full product label including serial # and product #. If people didn't follow instructions then that is on them. I think $21 is fair for a Blu-ray Reader + DVD Burner. If you only want a DVD Burner, I posted another deal for one at $10 AR.

I burn Blu-rays at 4x typically and that's god awful SLOW... wish quality was higher on 8-12x burns but they are not..
