FYI to anyone who buys it, the game is currently in a broken state due to the June 30 patch, which causes fatal errors fairly soon after you start playing. They should fix it soon, hopefully any day now.

The game is so awesome they really need to fix it asap.

You really think the game is awesome? All the great reviews surprise me, I find the game very frustrating. Every mission starts as an uphill battle that you need perfect execution to complete before the timer runs out. Then each alien encounter is a random group of enemies who get to move into the perfect position as soon as you discover them.

Not to mention line of sight issues and I constantly get shot through walls both horizontally and vertically.

This game does NOT work with the xbox controller, even though the original xcom did. They partnered with valve and only the steam controller works.

Can't believe the Xbox controller didn't work when I first tried to use it. I thought something was wrong with the game.

Weird, I found the game too easy on the 3rd of 4th difficulty, so I switched to the highest difficulty.

Are you experienced with XCom games? I've been playing them for ages so that helps.

About the timer, install the mod that doesn't start the timer until you break concealment. Makes it more fun, and a bit easier, though it shortens the time once you actually start the timer.

Couple tips - when your team's concealed, don't move too deep into the map or you'll trigger multiple groups of enemies - engage the first group you find - get most of the team set up with line of sight and in overwatch mode, then use a man to throw a grenade at the clustered enemies. As in all XCom games, explosives are your best friend - they remove armor, they remove cover, and are guaranteed hits.

You should be able to take out 3 enemies fairly easily this way. If it's 6, it gets tough.

Thanks I'll try that out, but I can usually clear the first couple of groups with no problem, but then my squad is weakened and random groups of enemies pop up and wreck me. I'm about 2/3 through the campaign and am running low on troops, but since I can hardly complete each mission I have no chance if I bring a rookie or two

I've tried save scumming and sometimes the random group of enemies pops up, sometimes it doesn't. So it's just random luck whether you get boned in a mission or not. Plus I get shot through walls and trees which I believe is a glitch.

I really wanted to like this game because I've played all the previous XCOM games and completed Enemy Unknown.

Out of curiosity, what was the price during the Steam Summer Sale? I can't remember. All I know is that I struggled internally to not buy it, buy I suspect this is the lowest is been.
::sigh:: I loved Enemy Unknown, including its infuriating glitches, but this may lead to more late night gaming and high blood pressure on nights before work. :-/

This game has a good concept, but they need to release the patch to fix it and also the gameplay is a bit ridiculous.

They can shoot through trees because that cover isn't absolute, it just reduces their chance to hit. I've never seen an actual glitch where a bullet goes through something it shouldn't. Same for walls - if the enemy has line of sight, they can shoot you.

So don't sweat it - the game's designed for veterans imo - the difficulty levels aren't that different, in fact it affects the strategic more than tactical game in my experience. It's just a tough game - you need to learn lots of tactics and tricks. Use overwatch mode a lot, use grenades and missiles a lot, and don't ever move a guy the full movement if you're not sure you might encounter an enemy group, if you know what I mean. Do partial moves so the guy can retreat or fire if he wakes up a group of enemies.

The best part of this game is the mods - they are incredible and so easy to install, you just click "install" on the Steam XCom 2 page and it automatically adds it to the game.
