I need a new printer for printing shipping labels for my new small home business selling stuff online, is this a good option? I currently use a Canon iP1800 and the cartridge replacements are costing me a lot

This is a terrible option for you. Get a $50-$100 laser printer from brother, they have cheap toners and are reliable.

If you absolutely must have color printing, get CISS for the Canon iP1800 that you have now.

Unless you MUST have color, go with the laser printer from brother. Much more reliable, lot less frustration, much much cheaper

Thanks for the suggestions, I did look into both, and I'll probably just purchase a brother printer since I've been doing some research when I read your comment and a laser printer seem to be the way to go when you just need to print shipping labels. Reped.

Keep in mind that for business you need reliability first. When used by a novice most CISS systems are very, very messy, extremely unreliable and should only be used when you have massive color printing to do on a regular basis. If you do use a CISS - be sure to become an expert on them and never put the printer higher or lower then where the CISS sits or the ink will slowly start to drain either into the printer or onto your floor. Don't ask how I learned this.

If you end up needing lots of color printing, try to find a used HP 4600 laserjet. They are ancient beasts that are known for long term reliability, cheap toner, and can be found for under a $100. These printers are slow, clunky, and massive, but they get the job done and over the long term will save you hundreds in toner. I have four of these monsters and I assure you that there is absolutely no cheaper way to print in color.

A cheap laser printer from Brother is ideal because the toner are usually around $15 and the printers are well known for long term reliability. Check slickdeals for a $50 printer deal. If you can get duplex printing that is even better since it saves paper when printing out those invoices.

If you think you need scanning/faxing, best to get that now rather than later. A brother all-in-one (AIO) can be had around $100. Stay away from the HP AIO's - they are known for feeder roller jams. Set up an alert for slickdeals AIO and you'll find one.

Whatever you do, be sure to price out the cost of toner/ink refills when buying a printer. Some printers have made their toners impossible to refill due to chips, gear designs, and other sensors - those printers are cheap at first but will cost you later. Since 2005 or so, nearly all printers have been designed to be disposable and are built as cheaply as possible while the ink/toner is as expensive as possible to make up for the manufacturers costs later.

Finally, when printing labels - the cost is not only the printer or the ink - factor in the cost of your time. If you spend 1 hour a day taping/gluing labels to boxes then it may be worth it to you to buy laser printer paper with adhesive backing.

Good luck with your business.
