Or if you need some speakers and don't care about the "Audio Control Module (with built-in Beamforming Microphone) ", you can get the Sound Blaster Z + Inspire T6300 5.1 speakers [creative.com] for $110 FS.

Was thinking about getting this because I like the convenience of the control module but apparently this results in inferior sound vs plugging directly in the card. So that killed it for me

I have always wanted to try a sound card would this make much of a difference from onboard using ProMedia 2.1 speakers?

For what you described, no.

The benefit I see:

Really good sound both signal/noise quality and surround sound.
Built-in headphone amp up to 600ohm. (Good for those like me who owns a high impedance headphones like HD-600)
Convenience of the switch (you can easily switch output from headphone to speaker). Unfortunately, it is revealed that this switch degrade sound quality...

To be honest, for most (99%) people, built-in sound on the MB is good enough. This soundcard is cheaper buying a half-decent headphone amp. (I never found any objective review/impression of the headphone amp part, but the sound card part gets decent review)

I ordered one to try out... If I can't hear a difference from my current setup, Its going back.
