[Solved] Dell inspiron 7457 can't get touchscreen working

Ero 2,861 945 July 19, 2016 at 08:48 AM
I installed a new SSD in this inspiron laptop and a fresh windows 10 Home build. The touchscreen worked with the old hard drive, so we can rule out hardware issue.

I checked the dell site for the model, they don't seem to offer any touchscreen driver. In fact, they barely offer any drivers for this model. I had to get the trackpad driver directly from synaptic for example.

I don't know if there's a setting in windows 10 to enable/disable the touchscreen. Device manager shows no unknown devices, but there are some generic microsoft drivers installed from what I can tell. I tried turning on tablet mode, but it didn't turn on the touchscreen. BIOS has no setting for touchscreen either.

Please throw some ideas at me. I've killed 2-3 hours on this already and it's pretty frustrating.

EDIT:
Solved by unseating and re-seating the monitor cable on a whim. I have no idea why this helped anything, it wasn't loose before. But as long as it's working now I'm happy.

Did you clone the old hard drive or just install it and try to reinstall all the drivers?

Did you try going to Windows Update? Also, what Sensors display for you in device manager?

Edit: You may also want to check these settings: http://www.dell.com/support/Artic...N290492/EN

I installed a fresh install from the ISO and then let windows update get drivers. Then I installed whatever drivers Dell had available on their site on top of it.

Yup, windows fully updated. I'll post a screenshot of device manager when I get home. Thanks.

You could try cloning the original HDD to the SSD since it'll have all the drivers installed already.

Did you see this?

I did. It was a bit confusing because That thread references the trackpad, but i was searching for the touch screen.

At any rate, after reading everyone's comments, I opened the computer back up, unseated and reseated the monitor cable (it wasn't loose, just on a whim!), and it works now. So, weird, but all is well that ends well Smilie

Reps all around.
