Looking for a decent 29" mountain bike

Hi slick dealer nation... I'd like your input Smilie

I'm looking for a 29" mountain bike. I would like to be able to bike trails, but nothing extreme or jumping. I'm not a pro biker or anything, but I'd like these specs:

- Aluminum (or anything lighter than steel Walmart bike
- 29" wheels
- disk brakes
- at least a front shock (with lock out would be rad)
- frame for someone 5'10"-6'
- no twist shifters

Would like the price to be free, but really I'd like it to be under $500... I might go higher if the deal is too good to be true...

Thank you.

id suggest bikesdirect.com decent bikes for good value. especially if you are not all that serious about MTB. are you ok with 27.5 or does it have to be 29? You are probably looking for a large bike size anywhere between 18-19" even a 20-21 " if it is a good price.

Lock out on low end shocks are a joke. they cause more problems than they are worth. Just ride with it unlocked most of the time. With forks, go big or go home.

If you want new. check out bikes direct

http://www.bikesdirect.com/produc...nbikes.htm - $399
http://www.bikesdirect.com/produc...m29_x4.htm - $499
http://www.bikesdirect.com/produc...expert.htm $550

all these bikes capable of doing low midrange stuff. if you get serious about MTB, this bike may last you about 2 years. if casual riding, this would be fine (3-4 times a year < 10 mile rides)

Their sister site (bikeisland - outlet site) has some good ones usually$50-$100 off their regular site for scratched bike.

http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKT...rodID=2887 $550

if you dont mind used you can probably find some bigger name brands (trek, giant, etc) used on craigslist for about $500.

Hey thanks jaqnabox. The first two bikes are the same price... So which is a better buy? Also, thanks for the info on sizing. I'm pretty sure I want a 29er. I have a 26" Nishiki from like '01... and it seems really dinky in comparison to the 29ers I've sat on at multiple big boxes...

I saw a GT idrive 3.0 at the pawn shop when I went to dinner last night... I saw it cause they were riding in the parking lot. They wanted $199 for it. I didn't get to look at it cause they were closing and I was going to dinner... Anyways I've read that GT bikes are desirable for their frames alone... It was a Large which is my size on other bikes... Looks like an old bike though from looking online... Recommend an old bike?

Thanks.
