Windows 7 & Windows 10 Merging.

DKTVPN 3,520 1,815 July 21, 2016 at 09:21 AM
I upgraded win7 to free win10, created dual boot because not all old software works on win10. I tested on a second PC upgrading to win10 and all old software working fine.

Now I want to merge the first machine by:

- First upgrading again from win7 to 10.
- When done I guess I'll have 2 win10 choices from dual boot?
- How to merge the win7-->10 with win10 and delete the dual boot?

I would be interested to see if 2 copies of Windows 10 on the same machine will activate if in dual boot. Can't answer your question on merging.

I assume they will, won't it see it as a reinstall basically?

Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

you can just overwrite the win10 partition during install perhaps? maybe not though if its an upgrade path, a clean install gives you options to chose and modify partitions. if you have a clean install disc, backup the files you want to keep and just format the whole drive, delete the win10 partitions during install

Clean install doesn't install old software. But if they are already in Win7 they'll will work after upgrading to Win10.

You'll need a software to transfer those applications, you can't merge them. Something like pcmover.

Its best to not try to transfer any microsoft app's because windows 10 will probably not be able to uninstall them. Yes, I ran into that issue.

Those transfer apps might not work properly. I got experience back to Win 98 to Win XP and not all of them worked.

Today, I did the Free Upgrade again on dual boot and yes there are 2 choices of Win10. Just deleted the Clean Install Win10 and it's back to single boot Upgraded Win10.

It worked fine for me, all the way up to windows 7. Windows 10 was where I was getting problems.
