I agree

Any recent DSLR should be a big upgrade from smartphone in terms of image quality (with the possible exception of something like automatic HDR on stills in poor lightning). Auto-focus, even on entry-level models, is going to be much better. Newer models also offer some of the features that you're used to on a smartphone (touchscreen, face detection, better AF in live view).

What you should buy really depends on how committed you are to it, and whether you want to spend more later to upgrade your body. Personally, I don't find the base T5/T6 models very compelling, since Canon removes a lot of features from the already-entry-level T5i/T6i, although the resolution isn't as low as it was on previous models.

If you don't want to spend up to a T6i, T6s or (vaunted) 70D, my recommendation would be to spend an extra $100 and grab the SL1 with 18-55 STM refurb combo [canon.com] over the T5+18-55 IS II kit. It's a better kit lens (STM > II), the body is a little more compact (which you might find attractive as a smartphone shooter), and the SL1 has a newer sensor and offers more shooting features than the base Rebel models. While both models feature face detection (in live view), of the two, only the SL1 has a touchscreen (and a higher-res one at that).

$80 off the 70d kits, not bad! Might jump on it.

What is the advantage of T6S compared to 70D other than smaller body size?

Good deal on the 70d. Hard to believe but someone claimed to get this for $660 on last years thread.
Someone please convince me to upgrade from an SL1.

I have a 60D and was thinking of getting a SL1 for a lighter package in order to use during hikes.

Great deal on 70d. Too bad canon is too late on the sale. I got a good deal on nx1 because I kept drooling over 4k and adobe finally supports h.265

T6s - 24mp, digic 6, 1/4000, 5fps,
70D- 20mp, AF, digic 5, 1/8000 shutter, 7fps, timelapse

I suggest going to DPRs comparison tool for a list of everything. Theyre very similar. T6s is newer, better processor. For stills Id push T6S. For video, 70D. Just my opinion, best to do your own research

Is anyone else still waiting for their orders from the sale a little over a month ago? I ordered a T5 and it's been showing "order received and ready for processing" since June 16th.
