Got an email from carfax tonight. I was selected to receive a free myCARFAX account for my own vehicle.

https://www.mycarfax.com/lp1303t1...th_smc_001

Shows my car's service history, recalls, and tells me when my registration is due, oil change, tires, etc. Pretty cool

... only if done at the dealer and it is reported. Pretty much useless.

I thought this service was more than 2 years old. I think that's how long I had it. The dealer visits are recorded automatically and I add my DIY services manually. I use MS Access and myCarfax is like a backup.

Do I need to tell them what I have done to my car or it could read my mind?

CarFax wants you to report on your car. So they can sell this info. Where is the deal?

There is no report..

Technically you can record every three months oil change and every six tire rotation to increase value of your car... Who is gonna check Wink Need to add it to my calendar now.

That's some pretty useful info. Is this the case for all these vehicle history report services?

I've been using myCarFax for a while during my car search. While it's not as comprehensive as an actual Carfax/Autocheck, there are couple of things it's great at for free.

1) Use of license plate # to pull up the car's info. Often times you'll see idiots listing their car with the wrong model year, this is important because you might prefer a certain year for a particular car for varies reasons. OBD1 vs OBD2, bluetooth capability, upgraded navigation system, LED headlight/taillight, etc.

2) Verify the mileage - just check when's the last time it was serviced. If it says 2014 - oil change, mileage 143,000 and the shady bastard says the car only has 88k miles. You know he's a lying piece of crap and you can save your time.

3) See if the owner service the car at the stealership. If there's routine maintenance at the stealership, then you know for sure you can buy this car with confident! (maybe, but much more confident than the shady guy who swears it's 88k when it was 143k back in 2014, and he also said he lost the title but will hand over a bill of sale)

It had some mom and pop, as well as gas station mechanic shops as well. They reported my services, but not as complete. Surprising, I cannot find some bigger chains such as Costco, Sears, Goodyear, Firestone...etc.

I created a few missing services...mycarfax has noted those as "Self Reporting".
