because they are hortible for your gums. they cause your gum line to recede which causes many problems. i just asked my dentist this last week.

Firm brushes are too hard on the gums. Soft bristles should always be used....just for a longer period of time. But hey these are great for scrubbing grout or laundry stains! (Dental Hygienist)

I've had the opposite experience. I always buy firm and they become medium after a couple weeks. Considering dentists scrape and use polisher on your teeth I think a lot of the firm hating is hype. As is most of the bullshit dentists sell you.
