Asus x401a laptop screen went grey

ms2000 1,312 32 July 23, 2016 at 11:53 AM
I had Win 7 installed on asus x401a and took it to the Starbucks as I was working to upgrade to Win 10.

At Starbucks I shut it down and came home - it was sitting on the floor of the car inside a laptop bag along with a Lenovo - the ride had some bumps. At home, the screen became grey but I can hear Windows booting sound!. Connected an external monitor and it worked fine.Using the external monitor, I also did a fresh install of WIn 10 and activated it. But the symptoms remains the same.

Only known hardware issue is the web cam, a while back - I had it replaced which worked just once.

Win 10 device manager shows all hardware installed (other than the web cam) ... memory, cpu etc. I tried F8 to switch the monitor but not responsive.

I tried some methods from online such as pressing & holding the power key etc. Tried just the power cord too. No luck

I suspect LCD cable became loose - or cmos battery related. LCD screen has been fantastic when it was working.

Anything I am missing? Any other tricks?

After getting bios on ext screen I moved it to asus screen with Fn + F8 (asus screen had a clear display). I was able to toggle back and forth but from the 2nd time on, asus screen was grey and no display of bios.

So from the ext screen I quit bios and switched to asus screen - win 10 showed but tt looked washed and deteriorating - asus was not responding (mouse ..start button.)

I am running Eurosoft on it
In the process I figured that angle of the screen matters -for it to work-believe the ribbon from the screen is not making proper contact.

What is the fix? Is this something that I can do?

Reseat the cable, or replace it. I would agree this is what it sounds like. I don't think there is any software fix for you or it's related to windows 10,it just happened at the same time.
