I'll take it one step further, is $570 worth a desktop or would a pencil and paper suffice?

17 cents for a wideruled notebook
50 cents for 20 pack of pencils

You'd be able to play your hearts content of tick tac toe, connect the dots, etc. and would save yourself a cool $569 and change over said home built desktop...

I think you drunk 70 for the GPU. what card can you buy for $70 that will be as good as a 960m? you should also add a $100 battery back up to your price and a case with adequate power supply.
Hard to find 1080p screens for sixty bucks. Also, 750ti performs worse than 960m and is a hundred bucks.. Add to the fact that whatever tablet you'll be using to replace this on the go (not even going to go into how ridiculous that notion is for the sake of argument) and you're damn close to closing that $230 gap you describe.

Honestly, the fact that we're even having this conversation seems silly to me. For a laptop, this is a very good deal. Top-end CPU, higher end GPU, good SSD and RAM capacity, good screen for 800 bucks is a damn good deal

LUXURY! When I was a lad, we lived in shoebox in middle of road and played noughts-and-crosses with stick in mud...

Agree with lilgrubbybaby that this is a silly discussion...

It seems that there are a lot of deals of 960m based laptops lately. I assume that the new nvidias GPUs are going to be launched soon, any info on that?

Very solid specs for the price..

The only drawback I feel is the way it looks, that and the trapazoidal taper @ the back makes it look oddly disproportional.

Still, very solid specs @ $800..

Though hopefully it's an m.2 ssd, and not a 2.5", cuz if that's the case, you'd have to change it out any way if you want a second drive.

Y700 customizer implies the SSDs are m.2 (look at Hard Drive 1 and Hard Drive 2 in the customizer for the Y700).

But buyers should do their own research on that. Agree that it's a key question.

Hard to say. I just bought the 14" version last week for $629 and mine came with a 128GB m.2 ssd and a 1TB HDD. I swapped the HDD for a 960GB ssd and upgraded the ram to 32GB.... yes, 32... These things are capable of a lot for very little and the 15" model has a better graphics card than the 14. I'm not using it for gaming though so I'm happy.

The desktop version of 10xxs are already out. For mobile it's mostly rumors so far.

GeForce GTX 1080 for notebooks, GP104, 8GB GDDR5 256-bit
GeForce GTX 1070 for notebooks, GP104, 8GB GDDR5 256-bit
GeForce GTX 1060 for notebooks, GP106, 6GB GDDR5 192-bit
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti for notebooks, GP10?, 4GB GDDR5 128-bit
All these cards would launch somewhere around early August.
