Can the Best Buy employee really activate the phone without adding air time?

According to bestbuy CEO, that picture is not qualified for those requirements.

Picked up 2 tribute 5s , last 2 in stock, had to give license. The guy took forever, but walked away with 2 free tribute 5s. Thanks, OP!

Edit: He did ask me what kind of plan to add, I asked if could just activate a plan later on and he got approval. It ended up showing on receipt $35 plan but for 0.00 and it says in boost zone that its overdue. Good stuff

Yes, activating does not require a prepaid card.

Pardon my ignorance, how does this make some phones free? I took a look at the LG Tribute listing online and it's $49.99. So minus $20 = $29.99, not free. Is there something not (explicitly) mentioned that makes the phones free?

it was listed at 19.99 earlier today. it seems like they changed the price just like they did on monday. just keep a lookout for it since the promo lasts for a month.

I got lucky, tribute 5 still had the $19.99 price on the shelf and sales person honored the price despite showing in their system as 39.99. No more on shelf though.

So, worth a try at your bb?

What is the activation process? Just a scan at the register? Does the packaging have to be opened?
