Flash Memory Fragmentation – Myths and Facts?

It's not really explained in that article how deleted data is treated differently on SSDs vs spindle drives. On SSDs, we have TRIM to clean up the space on the disk that has marked as available. This is because overwriting data on an SSD takes a performance hit even more than a spindle drive. This is what is most important on SSDs. The fragmentation of the data isn't a big deal because there is no head that needs to go to different sections of the disk to retrieve data. So, sure. There is fragmentation. But, it doesn't matter the way they make it sound. The modern OSes don't even allow defragmentation. They automatically detect it as an SSD and only allow "Optimization".....or TRIM.

The article is 7 years old so it's likely outdated, and even if it isn't, an article extolling the benefits of defragmenting your flash drives written by a company that sells defrag software is highly suspicious at best.

Good point. Just a tad of an agenda in writing that article.
