Just a reminder, portable air conditioners are meant for people that can't, for whatever reason, use a window mounted unit.

All else equal, Windows units are quieter, better at dehumidifying, take up less space in the home, and more efficient since the radiator is already outside.

Some people aren't allowed to mount window AC units, and for them, portable units are the only next viable option.

damn it, that's a *really* good price on the 14k one new with amazon warranty. I'm trying to hold out for the version with a heater for ~400, but ye gods, this is hard to pass up as my 12k is working awfully hard cooling down my space...

I'd buy it but it looks very ugly

I will wait for the version with heater. Otherwise, it will be double ugly.

Amazon deal of the day -- been on the lookout for a good dual hose unit and this fit the bill at an excellent price. Reviews are overall great.

My purchase went through - the nice part is I got the recent $10 discover amazon credit applied to this, and an additional 5% cashback via Discover.

Final price to my door after 8.25% tax and free prime shipping: $351.80

All good advice. The only reason I bought the 14K BTU unit was because we were in an apartment for a few months during the summer and they wouldn't allow window A/C. In addition, window units should be cheaper.

I bought this and I already have a 10K BTU single hose unit... bought it a few years ago, just not efficient at cooling when it sucks air from the room outside of the one you are trying to cool.

Going to sell mine on CL and recoup 70 to 80% of the cost of this one I just bought Smilie

Exactly. I would much rather have a window unit but my slumlord still has old school crank windows so these are my only option.

Also, some people like them because they can be put away easily unlike window units which are mostly permanent, right? Also, they don't take up a window.as badly.

I live where we need AC maybe 15 days out of the summer so a window unit doesn't seem as great IMO.

That said, how much more efficient are Window units?

How do you get this to work with crank windows? Id get one for our bedroom (upstairs in an old 2700sq ft house), but the windows are newer crank side opening style.
