I bought a 5 tb Toshiba internal desktop 7200 hard drive in April 2015. Lasted til June 2016. Didn't have a ton of hours on it. Confidence is low on this brand. Interestingly, Toshiba sent me a prepaid card rather than replacing the drive. I was not given any other option.

How would these do in a NAS? Currently have two 3TB WD's raided that are full.

For all its marketing about high reliability, it only comes with 2 year warranty.

Just some more anecdotal reports: I have a few of the previous Gen 5TB (3 year warranty) purchased in the same time frame and they haven't failed yet.

Was the prepaid card like a rebate credit card with fees, etc after months? Was it for the full purchase price? Did you need to provide receipt or no since it was within the warranty period from manufacture date?

have the 5TB TOSHIBA MD04ACA500 in tandem with a HGST NAS HDD, it actually runs a few degrees cooler - slightly noisier doing random seeks., no issues in RAID-1

The MD04ACA was one of the Hitachi 3.5" desktop drive designs that Western Digital sold to Toshiba [anandtech.com] when it acquired Hitachi. That sale didn't include 3.5" enterprise drives (e.g. Ultrastar). The X300 seems to be a newer design by Toshiba, although it likely reflects their experience with the Hitachi predecessors.

I've been buying the 6TB USB Toshiba version locally for $175 and shucking them out of the enclosures. I just checked and it's a different model number, probably not 7200rpm. So this is a decent deal if you want something a little faster.

Kinda moot if you're going to just make a huge array to store movies on though. Raw RPM speed isn't a giant factor in that mode.

*edit - oh thought I'd add.... the onboard SATA controller on this system I use is a Asrock 970 board, and it hates my Toshiba drives. Too new? Don't know, but it breaks my mirror sync all the time. I've gone back to software/windows mirroring until I find another solution. It's slower but it works. Guess I need to buy a real SATA RAID card.

Did you return the hd back to them?

the MD and MG04 series are Toshiba made, Hitachi sold the DT01ACAxxx used in the 1-3TB versions but 4TB and above came out in 2014 long after the acquisiition. those with firmware FP1.2 had an HDT part #, but firmware FP2 and up did not.

I use this in a PS4 with the Nyko Databank. Solid drive for that purpose, no issues. Works fine with sleep mode. Slightly louder than non 7200 rpm drives.

These are noisy drives. I don't have issues on RAID1 for 1.5y not this model of course.

Not sure about the Toshiba X300.

Found this, if anyone is interested. These go for $320+ easily. Been eyeing for it but it's such an investment for me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WD-Red-8T...Swj2dXkSeJ
