MS Outlook - Not Free??

roykirk1 735 166 July 28, 2016 at 05:48 PM
Got my new PC today. Have used Thunderbird email program years, but it blew up on me twice in the last 14 months. Decided to use Outlook this time around...

Set it up and... was surprised to get popup to activate Outlook. Isn't Outlook free to use?

If not... what's a good free email reader?

Thanks in advance!

I think you're thinking of Outlook Express. Which was a free version.

Yes that's what's built in to Windows 10 which I am guessing this is what the OP has. If it's Gmail, or Outlook/Hotmail email I would recommend the web versions over a local client. Usually the web versions have more features.

Thanks and repped. As for the google link... lol... thanks? That's how I got Thunderbird in the first place, but was hoping some SDers could point me in the direction of a good email client that wont crash on me.

Twice (on different PCs) Thunderbird just suddenly lost 6-8 months of emails. Weird thing is, if I searched for the headings, it would find them, but if I tried to drill down/open the message, it was gone. So I guess the data file got corrupted but the list file was not impacted.

For now, I purchased MS Office via HUP from work and am using the "paid" version of Outlook for now. Not sure what will happen if I ever change jobs...

The software doesn't stop working if you change jobs. Personally, I prefer web based mail, and don't trust outlook. Too many issues when we used it at work.
