Then the Red Cross will turn around and sell your blood to hospitals for a profit of hundreds of dollars.

Didn't it used to be the rarer the blood type the more ppl were paid for their blood. AB negative etc.??
Also Dade-Broward Counties in Fl, are now not allowed to collect blood, since the Nation's 1st instance of zikia via mosquito happened!:http://www.miamiherald.com/news/h...62347.html

Was living in the U.K. in 1989 just over a year doing my masters and rarely ate beef there. I'm banned for life for donating blood in USA due to Mad Cow scare.
Tried to donate at several places no go...

Funny. I just randomly went today and saw that, although they didn't ask for my email.

I really didn't know they sold it. Do they really make a profit though? They have lots of people working for them.

It makes me think differently about the red cross, but it doesn't change the fact that donating blood is a good thing.

i mean, they have to pay their people and cover their expenses to get the blood, test it, store it, transport it, etc...but who knows what the profit margin is

If the distribution is regional, it also depends on what there's an acute shortage of and what they can 'utilize' the best. For example, I think it was in Orlando when they were looking for O+. It's the most common blood type (~1 in 3,) but also a universal donor for RBCs to ABO+.

Yes, they make a pretty decent profit. I learned about this when I was attending one of their annual galas.
