Intense and amazing series, TU. One of favorite along with Sopranos and BB.
Better PQ, better AQ, extras, often my own digital copy, and bottom line is I own it and I'm not renting it from someone else who could take it away at any time when they decide they wish,
HBO Blu's from overseas are region-free. That means they will play in any Blu-Ray player, even US ones. I bought Sopranos, the Wire, and Boardwalk Empire this way. All of them work, have the same extras as the US versions...EXCEPT no digital copies.

If you do not want the digital copies for more money, then these are good deals.

P.S. This version of The Wire is the newer one, with the widescreen update. Despite what one may think, the widescreen version looks AMAZING. Without going into too much detail, it's worth it. For all fans of the show and of getting 16:9 or more ratios with HD treatment for their shows, it is worth it.

Tried to like it but just couldn't. Kind of like 2nd season of true detective.

Tempting since I only have the regular DVD set. This series is easily in the top 5 of shows all time.

Serious question: With digital formats easily available (e.g. HBOGo), what is the benefit (or why do you) choose to own a hard copy (for those that do purchase deals like this)?

And I ask this as someone who used to buy every single DVD I could get my hands on...until I kept moving and never felt like toting them around. Just curious.

It's a HUGE upgrade on the DVD set. Widescreen, HD treatment, a good chunk of extras. You'd be spending $70+ to get it over here on those rare HBO-Holiday sales that creep in.

HBO Go requires an internet subscription and HBO subscription to take advantage of it.

With HBO Blu-Rays, the US versions tend to come with Blu-Ray and Digital Copies, but their pricing doesn't tend to fall less than $70-75 during holiday sales lately (Sopranos and Wire are strong examples of this). I instead bought Sopranos overseas for less than $70 cause I wanted the Blu's and didn't need the Digital (at the time, I missed the holiday sales, so it would have been $85-90). The Wire ran around this $60 price too when it was $75-80 in the US at the time. Boardwalk Empire dropped as low as $50 when it floated $70, 75 normally.

The big drawback to the overseas Blu's is no Digital copy. As a result, they can sell for less money. Otherwise, they are Region-Free Blu's and tend to have all the extras, subs, dubs and the like that the US versions do.

**The only HBO show from overseas I do not recommend buying is Deadwood. Even after a first print and a reprint, they can't get the technical issues with this fixed still; the US version is okay, though**

Plus, Blu's do equal less discs. There are times where you do get the same number of discs that you would for a DVD set (Game of Thrones, for example). In return, the video/audio quality tends to be much higher and they can fit extras onto those discs when you'd need a separate DVD for said extras.

And with Digital, if you just want the show, then it's worth it. If you're a fan and want to get Extra stuff (like making-of featurettes, cast interviews, deleted scenes, etc), the Digital copies tend to not have them.

For the TL;DR Summary:
-Digital: Convenient, but need internet (offline downloads require huge storage mediums to put them on)
-HBO Go: Convenient but need internet AND HBO subscription
-Blu-Ray: Physical, but you get best A/V quality, Extras on fewer discs **There's been more Blu-Ray exclusive content as of late, too**
-DVD: Physical, cheaper but lower quality A/V and more discs

The Wire was $60 from an American retailer (UV digital copy!) around black Friday. If you can hold off until black Friday it will probably be $60 again and you would get the UV copy

Thanks. My favorite show ever. But, I already have it on DVD (also Netflix, HBO go, & Amazon Prime). This is the best series I've ever watched. So, I'd like to own the Blu-rays. But, if I can get Blu-rays + digital in future for same or better, I'd rather wait.
