I missed out on the Amazon prime day deal for Nvidia Shield TV for $150, but this is the next best deal currently and expires at 8:59am Est. They're currently running a promo for 15% off for the purchase of at least 2 eligible electronics (Max discount = $40)

I added the Nvidia Shield TV $192.66 (get this price by opting out of free returns and paying with debit card)

https://jet.com/product/NVIDIAr-S...ad63e4042c

and also added 2 GoGreen Power Alkaline Batteries, AA 4 Ct = $1.42 ea. (opt out of free returns and pay with debit card also)

https://jet.com/product/GoGreen-P...baaa349b84

Then use code: ELECTRONICSBASH for 15% off (the best part about this is that you don't have to create a new account to get 15% since this code works for existing customers) You might be able to get this for probably a couple of cents cheaper if you get the small watch batteries but I opt for the Double AA batteries since I find it more useful for my needs.

Subtotal: $203.09 - $7.59 extra savings - $29.33 (15% off) = $166.17

with this beast you can actually install a plex media server, that for me would be enough reason to buy one.

Friend has his network drives mounted and the little bastard can transcode 2, 1080p streams with ease. Really tempted to go the same route.

can this do 4k transcodes on plex?

just built a plex server, can handle around 10 x 1080p streams with ease, around 4 x 4k streams. i'm guessing since this can only transcode around 2-3 x 1080p, it barely can handle 4k/hevc.

any ideas? (looking for another plex server, but something cheaper, and must transcode 4k/hevc since its becoming the standard.)

The shield can handle 4k transcodes just fine.

This article from the official plex blog is worth reading if you're looking for some general info on using plex with the nvidia shield: https://www.plex.tv/blog/nvidia-s...mplete-us/

I have one of these. It's an amazing device provided you can pull 25mbs off of your internet connection with GeForce Now. That X1 chip and its ancestors are going to be the gateway to practical applications of AI. They're the units behind Tesla's Autopilot systems(the primary part, anyway; you can buy a devkit for about $250 these days).

I don't use mine all that much for gaming simply because I have so many games from my time on SD. I did subscribe to the service, and will again when I have the time to actually use it. It's 4/5 stars, with 5 star performance yet 3 star content availability. Nvidia does make an effort to get top notch premium--that is they cost additional money beyond the monthly $8--but it's generally only what seems like one major premium title every two months. I could be wrong about that... I'm only telling you what it feels like to me without bothering to check the specifics. What new titles they do have function as their PC counterparts.... which means better than console graphics but with minor bugs and glitches common to console ports(keyboard commands where no keyboard exist, tutorials telling you to push the K key... you get the gist.

It does have advantages over the Xbox One with 4K video, and better native app support through android, but the Xbox One is still the superior system. And with Xbox Ones starting to run at an adjusted(+$100 gift card at Fry's) $149 it's still a better idea to get the Xbox one at $250 then the Shield X1 at $160.

Exceptions to that:

1) Part time parent or grandparent that wants to have a game system for when the kids come over that will still be useful to you as an entertainment hub, get this over Xbox One.

2)If you travel alot, spend much of your time in hotel rooms or in man camps and bunkhouses, drive a truck or whatnot, get this provided your phone will support the connection. It packs a ton of punch for a tablet-sized device.
