other styles/sizes between $65 and $80 (regular price) - lowest price ever was $55 according to camelizer so this seems like a decent deal.

My dad loves these shoes. Been getting him a pair every other year for several years. One of the few comfortable slip on shoes that are available in wide sizes.

Is there a less expensive alternative to this in Wal-Mart or DSW?

The last pair I had lasted a couple years, before I retired them. Great for the asphalt jungle.

Yeah I bought a spare pair because I literally just bought a fresh pair last months for $80 so might as well save $20 and have another pair for the months ahead. great shoes for daily comfortable walking, only problem is that they get loose and rub your feet after a while, wearing out the interior and your socks without thick socks. I still love these shoes though

How is the sizing on these? Sizes vary too damn much.

It's a slip-on with spandex-like fitting so it's tight for typical size, but breaks in really well within a week or so and extremely comfortable and well-fitting afterward

Wow, really? It's gonna stay on your feet over rough terrain?

Here are my thoughts on these Jungle Mocs in this deal:

These shoes were designed in 1998 to be slipped on quickly before and after activities, according to Merrell, such as "the campsite after your hike through the trails of Yosemite or the lunch break after Bike up your local single track." In my experience you could use these for light hiking as much as you could use any other casual walking shoe but these will hold up substantially better than any other casual shoe with their leather upper and more sturdy outsole.

I would not not use these for anything technical or carry a pack with any amount of substantial weight (e.g. over 10-15 pounds). They allow such a significant amount of lateral play (see note about the spandex upper) that I would be worried about rolling an ankle in those conditions. Also the sole can be slippery on damp surfaces. I went off my usual path walking the dog the other day and fell into a creek because the sole had almost zero traction on wet/damp rock.

I thought they were extremely effective for walking around the car after taking off snowboard boots/mountain bike cleats and getting ready to drive home or eat at a diner, slipping on at 6am to walk the dog on paved, gravel pathways, bumpy fire roads, or non-technical single-track, hanging out for hours at the coffee shop, going through airport security (!), quick trips around a walkable city where your feet need protection from "city debris" (see this video [onlineshoes.com] of a Merrell rep describing the shoes and walking around Seattle), and other situations that call for flip flops or sandals but it's too cold. They are also great for jobs that require lots of standing in environments that require closed-toe shoes or lots of walking.

My fashion conscious friend absolutely hated the look of these. I mean she truly, truly despised them. They are definitely not going to impress anyone but their function is so excellent I didn't mind at all. You may want to avoid the Nubuck ("fuzzy" style) leather as it will get scuffed very easily. I believe mine were "Gunsmoke" and the scuffs blended well long-term.

The leather loosens about 1/4 of a size over time (6 months to a year). There is a spandex piece on the upper which also allows some stretch. This is IMO one of the reasons why they are so comfortable. The shoe seems to literally conform to your foot over a few months much like a quality leather boot broken in over years but without all the weight and bulk. They also have an anti-microbial coating that makes them okay to wear often without socks if that's your thing though you'll still need to air them out a bit.

I am personally looking into some of the new hybrid styles offered by Chaco but I will almost definitely get another pair of these eventually. For those who are looking for a more substantial, hiking-specific version of the Jungle Moc check out the Merrell Chameleon 4 Trek [sierratradingpost.com] or the current equivalent.
