About average to be honest. Would be a good price for a budget 55 inch 1080p smart TV but for 40 its just avg.

These are "effective" 120Hz panels, not native 120 Hz.

i thought effective was native, or there is a 3rd level now?

Vizio's backlight scanning delivers a fast 120Hz Effective Refresh Rate for a sharper picture that feels smooth and realistic - whether you're watching a game on Sunday, mirroring your laptop or binge-watching shows on Netflix.

Native is native or what the panel can actually produce. Effective is what you see after processing has taken place. I think. although this could use a bit of clarification.

Couldn't they do that with current TVs with a firmware update?

You are correct that "effective" is the refresh rate after software processing, i.e. double the native rate. Only the 65" and 70" 2015 E-Series sets have a native 120Hz panel.
