Skylake is a microarchitecture redesign using the same 14 nm manufacturing process technology[11] as its predecessor Broadwell, serving as a "tock" in Intel's "tick-tock" manufacturing and design model

It's the "latest generation" of Intel chips.

Sorry.. am "tech challenged". So, is this deal good at the price quoted?

I need a desktop for internet browsing, listening to music, MS OFFICE, watching few dvd movies (not that frequently).. no heavy gaming will be done.

Will this desktop work for my above needs?

Frankly it's not a good deal & it's way more than you need for what you listed.

That may be but overpaying for it is a bit silly.

Price isn't bad. Has a 6700 + mobo which is basically $400 right there.

But it would be a complete waste if someone buys this and doesn't put a SSD in it

No it isn't. The CPU is $280-300 and a board is $40 at best.

For what you stated you would use it for yes, a i7 is way more than you need for those kinds of tasks.

For basic Browsing, Music, Movies, Videos and Office programs you would want to look towards a i5 at most, maybe even a i3.

Hell i would say a SSD would be more important than the CPU for a basic browsing system like you are saying.
