Newegg has this 1TB m.2 for $289

I've been looking for one, and the only thing I could find cheaper was Sandisk, which my tech buddies said to stay away from.

Your tech buddies should be ignored. Sandisk is one of the biggest names in flash; they were second only to Samsung in TLC chips, and theirs didn't suffer the same performance degradation.

i would normally suggest intel before sandisk BUT..
the intel 540 is one of the worst performing SSD that anything you can find is probably faster than 540

After around 10 years using various SSD, my Sandisk SSDs are still going strong, I have had at least 5 Intel failed on me (2x X25-M, 1x X25-E, 2x Intel 320). Intel is a joke when it comes to making SSD. They all have the 8MB bug after a sudden power loss.

You can buy a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD from jet.com right now for around $309 with code triple15 (code only works for your first 3 orders). Might be worth the extra $20.

$10 cheaper at SuperBiiz now, with code "Hellosept": http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?p=SD540M21TB

(SuperBiiz is a good store, I've used them for years. Plus, don't know about others, but no tax for me.)
