Only $19.99/month afterward if you want it to be and do nothing. If you downgrade to the free service (Free Basic Plan: 200 mins, 500 texts & 200MB), it is free thereafter.

I thought that was pretty well known with FreedomPop.

How to downgrade to the free plan like a pro:
  • Once the device ships, login to your account (your initial password is in the welcome email)
  • Click "My Account > Plans". Look for the tiny "Details and Plan Management" link near your current plan.
  • Look for the tiny "downgrade" link near the bottom. Click through the up-sell messages until you get confirmation that you have downgraded.
  • Next, go to "My Account > Services". Click the small "View Details" link near your current services.
  • At the very bottom of the page, look for the tiny "deactivate" link. Again, click through the up-sell messages until you receive confirmation that it is disabled.
Optional: Disable Automatic Top-Up (this kicks in when you go over your 200MB)
  • Click "Billing > Billing Settings"
  • Click "Edit" near Automatic Top-up. This will charge your credit card for a $5 credit that will stay on your account. You can use it for possible future overage charges.

Has anyone tried this? I have an ATT phone to use, but if the calls are going over VOIP, isn't the voice quality horrible since there is no LTE connection?

Do people use this as their main carrier a lot? Doesn't look like it gets 4g which kinda sucks....

I tried Freedompop early when it was using wimax network. Unlike others, I never had any problem with them. About a month ago, I saw they had a SIM card for 99c so I decided to try them again. Then they had SIM plus a power bank for 99c. Oh well.

There are some issues with voice quality and Bluetooth connections. But since the service is free, I am still happy.

I got same deal at $0.99 last week. The sim card works with unlocked Pantech Element tablet at 4 G speed. Make sure you changed to free plan.

I use it as a backup for t-mo when we travel out to the boonies, since it can roam with both AT&T and T-Mobile as needed. It does work, and speed is actually pretty good. AT&T's 3G network is sufficient for most things, especially when you have metered data and you're trying not to use too much of it to begin with.

As for voice... call quality is not great... and the special freedompop VOIP / texting app you need to use is lame. If you're a heavy voice user I'd look elsewhere, but for anybody with light usage habits it really is a good value and the downsides might be acceptable.

By the way, this company uses "dark patterns" to trick you into paying, as mentioned above. You have to poke around to turn off both the "Plan" and the "Service" (assuming you don't want them). Also be careful with auto-topoff, which will bill you even before you actually run out of data, and they charge you to *disable* auto-topoff.

For those reasons I'd recommend using a disposable CC with a very low limit to avoid any nasty surprises.

Final note, the thing that makes this actually really amazing is the freedompop friends data bonus, which will get you ~500MB for free, making the truly free tier actually useful.

They charged me 5$ for some top-up. It was never and I see auto top up is set to N already for my account.

Billing address is the least of your problems - pretty much every bank will let you change that online. You can also use the physical address of the post office and #(PO BOX number) as an address and the post office will recognize it as your PO box.

My problem is no US mail service at my address - anyone know if they ship with REAL UPS/Fedex or the cheap services that hand off to USPS for delivery?
