Help with windows 10 uodate debacle.

I made the dreaded mistake of allowing windows to update windows 10 with the new anniversary update. now when windows boots it gets to the title screen (pretty picture with date and time that you have to clear away to enter your password). at this point, my computer is essential frozen.... keyboard and mouse do not work and I am unable to even get to the screen where you enter a password. prior to update all was working well.

keyboard and mouse work fine on another PC and other working keyboards and mice will not work either.. USB ports appear to be working as they power up my keyboard lights and I can boot from USB media (trying to recover windows). in my attempt to recover windows all option have failed. Even trying to reset windows (saving files) it will not let me due to bitlocker. entering the bitlocker code does not work (not accepted and the code was 4x verified correct). tried using the original disk and also recently downloaded windows 10 (usb) to reset windows but no luck.

Pretty frustrated by this. any advise would be appreciated.

Where is the keyboard and mouse connected? You might need to connect them to a ps2 connection.

-Try connecting a different kb/mouse to a different usb port both before windows boots and after.-Try to boot in to safemode (easier if secure boot is disabled)
-If RDC is enabled, try to connect.

Before you try anything drastic, make sure you have a full backup of your files.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

Tried connecting to all USB ports for keyboard and mouse but no luck. My MB does not come with the older PS2 connectors. (Asus z170 deluxe)

What is RDC? Will try safe mode

Tried all the options in safe mode but nothing standard will work. Tried numerous times. Refuses to go back to a previous build and I don't have a formal backup. I keep backups of important files so right now and resetting PC.

Thanks for yiu suggestions!

If the recovery options are failing there isn't much hope for getting things going. Odd that the keyboard is working right up until the windows prompt though. That would imply that Windows itself has corrupted the device registry.

If you have things saved I would just wipe the thing and start over.

Not sure what is wrong with Windows Update on 10, but it has seized up on me several times on different machines so far. I ended up disabling it and am now scared to ever let it update again.

Try a DIFFERENT keyboard

RDC = remote desktop connection. If you haven't enabled it, it won't work. It's built in to windows pro versions and functions similarly to VNC and Team Viewer. One another computer open a run dialog and type mstsc to open the RDC client.

To get into safemode, first try pressing F8 repeatedly right after you turn on the computer. If that does nothing, you'll need to disable secure boot / enable legacy boot options, you should be able to do this from recent windows installation media. Then press F8 and boot safemode.

Were you running antivirus? Had quite a few systems rolling back from 10 this past year get keyboard/mouse locked like that who were running Kaspersky. Ended up being some usb filters that kaspersky had (I'm thinking for when you wanted to use their virtual keyword for entering passwords) that got corrupted. On a few we were able to use the recovery mode dos prompt to locate and remove them. Pain in the ass though.

Do you have the OS on SSD and apps/data on a second hard drive? Below is a thread about that from Microsoft. They know about the issue. For me, I lost all wireless capabilities after installing the update. I had to delete the wireless NIC and reinstall it to get it to work again.
