I just bought this. I've been looking for a good cheap color laserjet for under a $100. Thanks.

This printer is not laser. It's inkjet.

For reference this printer sells for $109.99 at Amazon [amazon.com].
Not sure what the differences are, but the Brother MFC-J880DW [newegg.com] is also supposed to be $69.99 starting at 12 AM PT on 08/05/16 (Shell Shocker Deal).

how does this compare to the other fp brother deal for $50? Think it's worth the extra 25?

No difference. Brother has been doing this for many years...making a separate model # ending in 5 for certain retailers.

I bought this printer about a month ago because I needed to retire my HP that we've been using for over 15 years. The main reason was for the wireless connectivity but I also wanted to take a shot with Brother because of all the good B&W laser reviews I see everywhere.

Setup was really simple and I didn't even need to connect it to a PC. Wireless had no trouble recognizing my router and I was wirelessly printing from 4 different computers in the house shortly after setup.

My only complaint is that when the printer goes to sleep the home button slowly pulses on and off. It's a bright white light and since this printer lives in my bedroom, it's really annoying. I've folded a piece of thick junk mail in half and stuck it between the scanner bed and the top so it hangs down and covers the light. Not ideal, but I'm not ready to get a black sharpie and color in the light. Black electrical tape might be a better idea.

Other than that, I'm very happy with this printer. We don't print a lot so this printer fits my needs. Ink is about $20 a package on Amazon so it's not that bad especially since I was paying $35 a package for the HP. Obviously you could get cheaper by not buying Brother ink and go 3rd party or refilled.

TL;DR - Bought this printer a month ago, happy with it.

I have an older brother printer (J475DW) which has caused me to swear off brother printers for good. It's the only printer I've ever owned by brother and the only printer I've ever owned that would NOT let me use aftermarket ink carts. Unacceptable. I even transplanted the chips that came with the original carts and that worked for a few weeks but it keeps erroring that it can't find the color. I will never buy another Brother brand printer, I'm not going to be forced to buy your overpriced ink.

If you're buying anyone's branded ink, you're buying overpriced ink... that's not a Brother-specific issue. However, after abandoning HP a few years ago (actually, they abandoned me with their horrible products and worse support)... I switched to Brother for all my ink/AIO machines. I've had 7 of them, with 4 currently in daily use. I've never once bought Brother ink, instead buying generics on AMZN for about $1/cart. When I've had the occasional cartridge issue, I just tossed it unused into the $2 recycle bin.

Search amazon for "Light Dims". There are a few brands but that's the one I remember. They're little tinted stickers for electronics lights. They're great and come in different degrees of tint (basically light, dark, and opaque). I got the dark multi pack on black and silver (Apple products mostly) and they are perfect for what you're describing. Cable box, printer, router, PC/laptop lights, wall outlet/surge protector, etc. it should be around $10 for the multi pack but it's great to have. For opaque usage I use electrical tape. I have used scotch tape with a black sharpie to dim the light but the tinted stickers are better.

Weird, I have the J625DW and all I use are 75? aftermarket cartridges from amazon. I love paying almost nothing for ink.

Problem is, it's not the same printer. Apparently they had multiple versions of this printer and they switched something up with the chips. I've moved the chips from the carts that came with it and while I was able to print for a while now it won't do anything.
