Looks like it can be had for a little less than that on eBay right now:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1218...noapp=true

Not free shipping, but still < $799

No idea if the lens is a good one or not.

This is a very good deal for the lens. The first thing I noticed is it includes the 6 year USA warranty. Most cheaper Tamron's will be 'grey market' which means they were bought in Japan and sold in the US with no warranty. The linked ebay one includes 1 year warranty only valid in Japan.

Not only do you not get the warranty with grey market but if the lens breaks and you want to pay to fix it, Tamron will refuse to work on it. http://www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/gray_market.php

The used price on Amazon is around $770 for the Nikon version and none of these will come with a warranty.

There are some sellers on eBay that are similar to the OP's price but the are not from authorized dealers... when buying from these eBay sellers you're sacrificing the 6 year warranty.

And yes, this is a terrific lens. Not going to go in depth, but I imagine most people looking at this know that it's a good lens Smilie

Yeah, I was gonna go refurb 24-70L. This is giving me second thought. I've used Tamron w/my 5dmarkii and know it's a good one. Just seems really really cheap relative to other offers eg $1299 on Amazon right now. Was hesitant on account of the rebate. Experience w/SlickDeals rebates anyone?

Does the sigma 8-16 ever go on sale? Really want an ultra wide angle but they are pricey...

I just did the deal last time. Tamron Rebate was fast. Slickdeals is slower but they do send updates quickly so you know it coming. No corresponding Tamron rebate this time so I would wait but if your school participates there should be an Education rebate for another $300 off. If you wait you might be able to get all three.

Thanks all, going to bite on this. Great deal. Most say it's as sharp or sharper than the 24-70, but slightly lower AF.
