Late warning: Win 10 "anniversary update" needs a whopping 20G of space

Those who have plenty of space on their disks to spare won't notice this, but if you only have a little space left on your small SSD or something, this latest Win10 update takes up a fat 20gigs of disk space.

You would think that Microsoft would be nice enough to warn people about this by giving everyone a warning message BEFORE the start of the update process but NOPE.

On three of my PCs I didn't notice this issue because I had plenty of space, but on the last PC I have this weiner 60G SSD with only about 11G left so I ran into problems.

Again, the problem was with MS not giving me a warning before I spent some time trying to download and install:
  1. 1st time around, it just gave me this stupid "not enough memory to create ramdisk" message, which really could've been a whole number of things causing it
  2. 2nd, 3rd time around I kept trying to take care of the above message, no luck
  3. FINALLY, I directly downloaded the update executable file. Then finally it gave me the error message I needed to see (of course, this is still after all that time is spent re-downloading the stupid update) that I NEED 20G OF SPACE.

Ugh. Hopefully my little warning would help someone with a small SSD so someone else wouldn't have to go on the same retarded hamster wheel.

The ISO for the anniversary edition is actually smaller. I suspect the extra space consumed is in the form of restore points (or similar) and temporary downloaded files. Also, sometimes the sfc logs can explode and take well over 10GB of space.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

I spent 2 days trying to make room for the free 10 upgrade. It needed 16g of free space on a 32g winbook tablet. I would get to 16.2 and it would keep telling me it needed more.

Finally it started and updated. It runs great..if not a tad bit faster.
No complaints other than getting there

Completely agree, an alternative would be install from the ISO via usb.

External 32GB (or larger) flash drive to the rescue he says, based on upgrading Win 8 to Win 10 on his 2GB/32GB Chromebook killer. Time to see if it'll let me upgrade to the Anniversary Update.
